Threshold
As with my previous paintings, inspired by local Walthamstow artist Madge Gill, who created intricate works guided by her spiritual experiences, Threshold was made using an intuitive process. Paint was applied to the canvas with eyes closed, making automatic movements, similar to Gill's method of working in a trance-like state. Then, with eyes open, I responded to the initial marks, alternating between the two states to develop the final composition. This technique aimed to bypass my inner critic and allow for an instinctive outcome.
Threshold takes this exploration in a different direction, examining how art can actively inhabit our spaces rather than passively exist on walls. This folding screen painting literally cuts into the room, transforming from a traditional canvas into a functional room divider. I wanted to challenge the conventional relationship between artwork and viewer by creating a piece that requires physical negotiation—you must move your body around it, acknowledging its presence in space. The painting becomes both an artwork and an object that shapes how we experience the room, blurring boundaries between art and furniture, between looking and living with.
