Tracing Medusa
Tracing Medusa merges form and function through clay mixed with graphite—the raw ingredients of pencil lead. Shaped as Medusa herself, this sculptural object becomes both artwork and drawing implement. When dragged across paper, her serpentine tendrils leave graphite traces behind, recording her movement through space.
There's a poetic connection to the myth—just as Medusa turned onlookers to stone with her gaze, this object transforms its path into visible marks, making the ephemeral permanent. Like my touch drawings created with eyes closed, these marks emerge without visual guidance, revealing themselves only after the act is complete. This first experiment in a developing series explores how sculpture might actively participate in its own documentation, simultaneously existing as both the creator and the creation.
