Inspired by local Walthamstow artist Madge Gill, who created intricate works guided by her spiritual experiences, Automatic Alchemy 1 & 2 were made using an intuitive process. Paint was applied to the canvas with eyes closed, making automatic movements, similar to Gill's method of working in a trance-like state. Then, with eyes open, I responded to the initial marks, alternating between the two states to develop the final composition. This technique aimed to bypass my inner critic and allow for an instinctive outcome.
